JOB DESCRIPTION (Include Directorate/Division Summary and Complete Job Description)
The EBNN Research Operations Group is seeking a candidate to fill a part-time position in support of the EBNN Directorate infrastructure improvement plan. The RO Office’s mission is to improve operations across the Environment, Biology, Nuclear Science & Nonproliferation (EBNN) Directorate through a single, integrated organizational unit that provides guidance, oversight, direction, and coordination in the implementation of Laboratory policies.
Position Description
The professional will assist the EBNN DCOO and ESH manager with implementing a laboratory infrastructure improvement plan. In order to return unused or unnecessary EBNN laboratory and/or technical space to the Site Planning and Infrastructure Management Division the space must be free of hazardous materials, de-posted, and be acceptable for an Exit Readiness Review. This requires the review of the area for hazards, such as material handling (moving equipment), assembly/disassembly of equipment, chemical and radiological material disposal, handling of lead bricks, and excessing and recycling materials. The worker will prioritize the work to ensure the safe disposal of hazardous waste, legacy equipment, and other materials. They will also screen the location to ensure that barcoded property isproperly accounted for, and will notify the responsible Property Custodian for removal of equipment that is found. They will work with the appropriate EBNN or BNL staff to safely dispose of any hazardous chemicals or radioactive sources/materials that are identified during the laboratory assessment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Follow work planning and control documents for the disassembly of scientific research equipment that are in lab areas to be decommissioned.
- Work to within BNL’s policies and practices for the safe conduct of research by completing all required safety and compliance training, following procedures and work plans, and maintaining safe work areas.
- They will ensure that research material and equipment (glass containers, tools, instrumentation, computers, carts, gas cylinders, lecture bottles, etc.) are removed from the specified areas.
- They will call in work orders, prepare EMRs, and coordinate with the trades as appropriate.
Requirements
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
- a BS degree in a technical field or;
- a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 4 years experience or;
- a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 5 years relevant work experience or;
- 6 years relevant work experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to read and carry out instructions from a manual.
- Good mechanical skills: the ability to work with basic hand tools, power tools, and measuring tools.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Effective time management skills.
- Basic computer skills and experience with using Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to drive a Kubota
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Able to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
- Able to handle competing multiple projects and prioritize workload
- Experience working in a diverse international scientific environment
- Experience working in a government sponsored program environment
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
- Individual will be required to be able to wear standard Personnel Protection Equipment.
- Individual will be required to climb ladders.
- Ability to lift objects of at least 30 lbs., following established safety protocols.

- This position is temporary between 10/6/25 through 9/30/26
- Individual will be required to have a valid NYS Driver’s license (Real ID)
- Any two weekdays - 8:30am-5pm
- Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $32.59 -$38.57 / hour. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
